David Ogden Stiers
David Ogden Stiers to conduct Newport Symphony Orchestra

Through the 18th season of the Newport Symphony Orchestra, audiences and musicians have been auditioning new talent. Since last fall, the podium has seen a parade of conductors from around the country, each one a candidate for the symphony’s vacant artistic director position. This month, as the search committee makes its final decision, audiences will be treated to a familiar face: David Ogden Stiers.
Stiers will conduct the final concert of the 2006-2007 season, a program including works by Handel, Kabalevsky, and Prokofiev, on Saturday, April 7. The concert, to be held at the Newport Performing Arts Center, begins at 7:30 p.m. with a pre-concert talk by the conductor at 7 p.m.
Although best known as an actor, Stiers has had an active secondary career as a conductor. He has guest conducted over 30 American orchestras in such cities as San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Honolulu, and Chicago. Stiers’ acting credits include Broadway appearances in “Ulysses” and “Magic Town,” and acted in the touring companies of “The Three Sisters,” “Measure for Measure,” and “The Beggar’s Opera.” His film credits include “Oh God!,” “The Accidental Tourist,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and “Mighty Aphrodite.”
On television he has played major roles in “M*A*S*H,” “Innocence Abroad,” and “Murder, She Wrote.” He narrated the PBS miniseries on Ronald Reagan and New York City, and has been nominated three times for Emmy awards.
“The symphony has been having a fantastic season auditioning talented conductors for the position of artistic director,” said symphony president Tom Hurst. “At the end of a season of exciting new faces on the podium, we are so pleased to welcome back an old friend.”
Concert tickets are available at the arts venter box office and by calling 541-265-ARTS. Individual tickets are $32 and $20 for adults and $10 for students. Oregon Coast Council on the Arts members receive $1 discounts on individual tickets. The symphony orchestra is supported by the City of Newport, Coast Arts, and foundations, businesses and individual donors.
