A great way to pass the time

Some might dread the annual shift to daylight saving time, but Pacific Standard Time is always welcome. This Saturday, Sept. 24, the Newport Public Library Summer Music Series will welcome the jazz ensemble back to Literacy Park.

The quartet includes Bob Taylor, a jazz performer, educator, clinician and author who has taught jazz studies at Cal State University, Pasadena City College and Brigham Young University, as well as performing on trumpet in the BYU Faculty Jazz Quintet. He is the author of “Sightreading Jazz” and “The Art of Improvisation.”

Bill Hartsell has played and studied jazz guitar since picking up the instrument in third grade. He has been involved with the Oregon Coast Jazz Party, is currently the musical director/composer for the Central Coast Jazz Alliance and plays with the Lincoln Pops Big Band.

Richard Dutton is a versatile performer on jazz keyboards, clarinet and saxophones. He has played for the Lincoln Pops Big Band and has performed at a number of concert locations in the area and with jazz bands in England and Europe, concert bands in Israel and reggae bands in Jamaica.

Dr. GW Sandy Schaefer has performed 300 concerts a year with the US Air Force NORAD Band. He was principal percussionist of the Fresno Philharmonic, the Oshkosh Symphony Orchestra and the Green Lake Festival Orchestra. He has performed with Henry Mancini, Milton Berle, the Temptations, Ben Vereen, the Drifters and many more performers of note.

Saturday’s concert will take place from noon to 1:30 pm in Literacy Park, behind Newport Public Library at 35 NW Nye Street. Bring chairs, blankets and the whole family to enjoy an afternoon of music, community and fun. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, the action will relocate to the library’s McEntee Meeting Room.
