A modicum of Medicorum

Newport Symphony Orchestra violinist Alistair Kok and Trio Musicorum Medicorum will present a community Mother's Day chamber concert this Sunday, May 8, at Atonement Lutheran Church in Newport. Also on the program is the McKay High School Chamber Orchestra from Salem.

Trio Musicorum Medicorum formed in Portland in 2015 and regularly performs chamber music concerts and recitals in Portland, Newport and the surrounding areas.

Kok has performed professionally with orchestras and chamber ensembles throughout New England, Ohio and Virginia. Pianist Andrew Bonner studied piano at the New England Conservatory of Music and was a freelance musician in Boston for 20 years.

Cellist Rebecca Reese studied cello at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Denver. She has performed in many classical orchestras and chamber music groups and created studio-recorded background music for TV and movies such as “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “Ghostbusters” and “The Color Purple.”

The McKay Chamber Orchestra is an audition-only orchestra. The 12 talented student performers rehearse both during and outside of school and have been recognized as one of the best high school orchestras in the state.

This concert is a presentation of the Oregon Coast Youth Symphony Festival, which recently held its fourth annual event in Newport. The concert is free, but donations will be accepted to support the festival.

The program will feature Brahms’ “Trio II in C Major, Op.87,” Mozart’s “Divertimento No. 1,” “String Quartet 8, Movements 1 and 2” by Shostakovich and “Psalm and Fugue” by Hovhaness

The concert begins at 2 pm at Atonement Lutheran Church, located at 2315 N Hwy. 101 in Newport. For more information go to youthsymphonyfestival.org.
