A presentation that’s tough to beat

The winter keynote speaker presentation at the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology will be hard to beat when Michael Wimberly presents “Drumming: an Extension of Language” on Thursday, Dec. 2.

Rhythm has been used to call, signal, inspire and celebrate since the dawn of time. Wimberly, a composer, percussionist, educator and music producer, will investigate how rhythms are created from language, culture and nature.

Through this lens, Wimberly will share his joy of rhythm, drumming and its transformative nature.

Wimberly has recorded and toured with Charles Gayle, Steve Coleman, William Parker, David Murray and others. His orchestral compositions have been performed by symphonies in the US. Other compositions appear in the dance company repertory of Urban Bush Women, Joffrey II and Alvin Ailey. Wimberly’s latest release, “Afrofuturism,” was released in February on Temple Mountain Records.

The live presentation will begin at 4 pm via Zoom. For more information, go to sitkacenter.org.
