A tempera-ry art interlude

Tempera, watercolor and ceramics artist Steve Rutherford is featured this month at the Artists’ Studio Association’s Beachstone Gallery in Lincoln City.

“I adore the Oregon coast and the state in which we live,” he said. “Artistically, I have worked in a number of mediums including ceramics, woodworking, watercolors, acrylics and tempera batiks. Although I sometimes struggle to find the time to work with art, I am always hopeful that one day it will be the focus of my time and energies. At the moment, I am working on watercolor and pastels projects and look forward to teaching a tempera batik class when the ASA is open for classes again.”

Rutherford’s experience in the teaching, legal and administrative fields, coupled with extensive travels around the world have provided him with an enriched perspective on the importance of art in local communities around the globe.

“My partner, Vonelle Swanson, is a photographer,” he said. “She is directly responsible for bringing color and new perspectives back into my life and my artistic endeavors.”

A native Oregonian, Rutherford lived in the Lincoln City area in the late 1970s and fell in love with its enriching environment, diverse community and the wealth of unique individuals.  After his retirement as a high school administrator in 2012, he returned and currently works as a real estate broker for Taylor and Taylor Realty Co. and serves on the ASA Board.

The Beachstone Gallery is open every day, except occasional Wednesdays, from 10 am to 5 pm. It is located at the rear of the Artists’ Coop Gallery at 620 NE Hwy. 101 in Lincoln City.
