A triple-dog-daring performance
The Lincoln City Playhouse for Youth will present an iconic holiday classic with a musical twist when “A Christmas Story: The Musical” takes to the stage from Thursday, Dec. 8, through Sunday, Dec. 11, at the Lincoln City Cultural Center.
Based on the movie classic that runs round-the-clock at Christmas time and set in the 1940s in the fictional town of Hohman, Indiana, this show tells the tale of Ralphie Parker and his quest for the Holy Grail of Christmas gifts — an official Red Ryder carbine action 200-shot Range Model air rifle.
“We are definitely including all the classic scenes people know,” said Karen Bonelli Sanquist, playhouse director and founder. “But we have cleaned it up a bit to make sure it’s appropriate for all ages.”
An added element for the audience can be found on the playhouse Facebook page.
“We are going to have theme nights like ugly sweaters or pajamas,” Bonelli Sanquist said. “If you come during those nights in the theme, you will be added to a raffle and can win prizes.”
Though the run is short, the production is anything but small.
“We have 29 kids and five adults in this one,” Bonelli Sanquist said. “And there’s tons of music in it.”
A bake sale and the ticket “price” of a suggested donation of $12 will supply treats for the audience and needed funds to keep this treasured local theater company alive for another season.
“We are planning to have six productions next year,” Bonelli Sanquist said. “Our first one will be ‘Grease’ and we’ll have auditions for that in January.”
Showtimes for “A Christmas Story: The Musical” are 6:30 pm on Thursday, Dec. 8; 7 pm on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 9 and 10; and 2 pm on Sunday, Dec. 11.
