Act (and draw) like you belong

As Newport’s visual and performing arts centers prepare to get back to a full roster of activities, what better way to infuse the halls with energy then fill them with kids.

A fresh series of four summer visual and performing arts camps for kids aged nine to 18, begins Monday, July 12, featuring high-quality arts teachers who tailor each camp to its participants.

“We have both visual arts camps and theater camps to choose from this summer,” said Oregon Coast Council for the Arts Education Manager Sara Siggelkow. “There’s really something for everyone. We know young people have gone through a lot in the past year, so we have designed camps that will emphasize fun, creativity and self-expression.”

Class sizes are limited so families are encouraged to enroll early.

Visual Art Camps

Art Camp at the Newport Visual Arts Center provides an amazing opportunity for young artists to have fun and explore hands-on artmaking. Camp includes a variety of activities, games, outdoor adventure and fun. Projects help build on a foundation of art techniques and concepts. The resulting artwork will be part of a public exhibit at the Newport Visual Arts center.

Visual Art Camp 2 runs from Monday, July 26, through Friday, July 30, and is for kids aged nine to 12. The instructor is April Hoff. Tuition is $225.

Theatre Camps

Experience the creativity of theater while making new friends and having fun. Camp staff includes credentialed, experienced performing arts instructors who will support students as they explore the artistic process of creating theater in a space where they can express themselves, connect with others, and be who they are. Young actors of all skill levels are welcome, from novices to seasoned thespians alike.

Theatre Camp 1 runs from Monday, July 12, through Friday, July 16, and is for kids aged 10 to 13. The instructors are Nathan Bush and Stacy Fischer. Tuition is $225.

Nathan Bush teaches theatre and English at Toledo Jr/Sr High School and taught for OCCA during last year’s Online Summer Theatre Intensive of 2020. He came to the Central Oregon Coast five years ago from St. Louis, where he worked as a professional actor in live theater, TV. and film, and was an adjunct instructor at Spalding University. While an adjunct instructor of acting at Oregon State University, he directed “Inherit the Wind” and “The Passion of Dracula.” Locally, he has performed for The Red Octopus Theatre Company, New Visions Artists and Porthole Players and has appeared in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” “Doubt” and “Tiny Beautiful Things.”

Stacy Fischer grew up in Newport and fell in love with the performing arts at an early age. She studied English and Theatre Education at Western Oregon University, and has taught middle school Language Arts and Drama for more than 30 years. Stacy is involved with the local theater community and is on the board of Red Octopus Theatre Company.

The Shakespeare Theatre Camp will explore the theme: “Shakespeare on Love.”

Participants will work on a show, costumes included, built on a collection of scenes from several of Shakespeare’s works all involving love. Some are funny. Some are serious. Some are silly. All will challenge the actors and require excellence. And who knows, William Shakespeare himself might make an appearance.

Shakespeare Theatre Camp runs from Sunday, July 18, through Friday, July 23, and is for kids aged 11 to 18. The instructor is Rod Molzahn. Tuition is $225.

All experience levels are welcome, and scholarships for all camps are available. For more information, go to www.coastarts.org/camps or call 541-574-3364.
