Art in the spotlight
In a two-week Spotlight Wall Show running through Aug. 19, the Yaquina Art Association will feature the photography of John Williams and the artwork of Alana Williams.
John’s photography reflects his attraction to coastal subjects, having grown up in a commercial fishing family on California’s Mendocino Coast. He became interested in photography in his teens but it was observing Ansel Adams photographing the coast of Mendocino County that influenced him the most. The techniques that Adams used changed the way John approaches his own picture taking. After a 40-year career as an electrical engineer, he is now able to devote his time to photography and woodturning. He has been turning for more than 30 years and many of his wood pieces are on display in the Yaquina Art Association Gallery.
Alana has always been creative; beginning with pottery, then later moving on to decorative painting. Several years ago she joined the association and took her first watercolor classes. Since then, she has been devoting all her time painting in watercolor, acrylic and mixed media. She is showing several examples of each in this show.
The Yaquina Art Association is committed to supporting local artists, and all of the work exhibited in the gallery is by Lincoln County residents. A portion of proceeds from the sales of art go to maintaining the gallery and helping to fund a scholarship program and tuition-free art classes for the community.
The Yaquina Art Association Gallery is located at 789 NW Beach Drive in Newport and is open daily from 11 am to 5 pm. For more information, go to yaquinaart.org.
