Board? Never!

The Newport/Oregon Coast Community Drum Circle has added a new event to its summer schedule, and this one has a twist.

The non-profit will be presenting the live music for a 1950s-themed benefit event this weekend, in conjunction with Grace Wins Haven, the Newport resource center and advocacy organization for people without housing.

“I’m calling it ‘Beach Party BONGO-RAMA!’” Drum Circle Coordinator Chandler Davis said, “in honor of all those beach party movies with Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello from the ’50s and ’60s that some of us are actually old enough to remember.”

The event begins on Friday evening with a sock hop to recorded music and an Elvis impersonator, and Saturday’s all-day event will include a pancake breakfast, a large antique car show, vendors and food booths, a bubble show, costume contests, kids’ games, another appearance by Elvis and two full sets of local live music with the drum circle’s Ocean Thunder Drummers and special musical guests.

“It’s sort of a mixture of beach party luau, surfer bash and hootenanny rhythm jam with Caribbean and Polynesian island rhythms and our other multicultural World Beat rhythms along with classic old-timey rock 'n' roll by some of Lincoln County's finest local professional musicians and entertainers," Davis said. “I’m not actually sure how it’s all going to come together but with special guests like guitarists and vocalists Steve Cook, Eric Levine and Rand Bishop, I know it’ll be lively, entertaining, danceable and fun for the whole family.”

The two-day fundraiser to help acquire and fund a permanent warming center and shelter in Newport.

Admission at the gate is $12 for adults and free for kids 11 and younger. Advance tickets are $10 per adult or $20 for a family of four. Bring a non-perishable food item or kids’ toy for a a $1 discount at the door.

The event is located at the Grocery Outlet parking lot, 721 N Hwy. 101 in Newport.
