Crabby kids welcome

The Sustainable Living Center of Oregon wants to create more crabbers by furnishing a free Crab Trapper set for kids aged eight to 16 on Sunday, Feb 28.

Available to borrow for up to three hours between 8 am and sundown, each kit includes one kids’ crab trapper, bucket, crab gauge, location and instructions. Traps can be put out at Siletz Bay or Depoe Bay.

A refundable deposit for each set is required, and bait is not provided. The bait can be any meat, but dark, raw chicken works best. There is no limit to the number of sets per family, and there is no charge unless it is not returned.

Lessons on how to clean and cook the crab are available for $2.50 per crab.

Children under 12 are allowed crab without a license all year long. Children 12 or older must have a license, available at Bi-Mart or Fred Meyer for $10.

Volunteers are needed to hand out traps and clean and cook crab.

Due to the limited number of sets, reservations are required. For more information, email nextay@cablespeed.com or call 541-765-2109.
