Don’t sit this one out

The September show at Manzanita’s Hoffman Center for the Arts Gallery will feature painter Jef Gunn’s “The Coast,” a selection of oil landscapes painted from observation, en plein air.

Subjects include the Oregon Coast and Puget Sound.

The show will also feature oil paintings by Martha Bergman called “Pasticcio,” meaning a pastiche of paintings inspired by Italian renaissance painting techniques like Botticelli’s chiaroscuro, high light strong lines and muted colors. The painting titles are based on illustrations by Botticelli for Dante’s “The Divine Comedy.”

Joining the works by Gunn and Bergman are metal sculptures by Bill Atwood, who incorporates found objects in delightful ways. He begins each piece by keeping an open mind about materials, laying out various collected pieces on a clean table and allowing for relationships to develop between objects.

An artists’ reception will be held from 3 to 5 pm this Saturday, Sept. 3, during which artists will speak about their work and answer questions. The Hoffman Gallery is located at 594 Laneda Avenue in Manzanita and is open Thursday through Sunday from 1 to 5 pm. For more information, go to hoffmanarts.org or call 503-368-3846.

Learn plein air landscape painting techniques from Gunn at the beginners workshop on Friday, Sept. 9, through Monday, Sept 12 from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm.
