Hangin’ out in Yachats

Each spring for the past five years, local artists have volunteered to design and paint banners to be hung on the city-street lamp poles through Yachats during the summer months. This year’s banners met with a particularly strong early-season storm, but survivors will be on show at the 2022 Yachats Banner Project auction and artists reception in the Yachats Commons multi-purpose room this Sunday, Oct 9.

Festivities include the viewing and silent auction of the banners, a meet and greet with the artists and a delicious selection of savory and sweet appetizers provided by The Drift Inn.

Invitations to participate in the banner creation are limited to those who live within about 15 miles of Yachats.

Artist Michael Guerriero has again coordinated the project, with sponsorship and assistance from Polly Plumb Productions.

“This year, 32 beautiful banners were painted by volunteer artists with the theme, ‘Trails to Yachats’ as tribute to the Amanda Trail Bridge Dedication,” Guerriero said. “The banners were hung along the town’s light poles on Highway 101. They quickly took a beating, when gusts from a late May storm tore out most of the grommets at the bottom of the banners.

The wind and rain then whipped the canvas to the point of peeling off the paint from the flexing. Given all the damage, they were retired from rehanging and returned to the artists.”

Many of the banners were restorable and will be in this year's fundraising auction.

“Having learned from this failure, next year’s banners are being redesigned and they will be displayed later in the season to avoid such grueling weather,” Guerriero said.

Proceeds from the auctions are used to support arts programs and fund the project for the following year. Note cards created using the art on each banner have been printed and will be available for sale at the event.

The reception begins at 5 pm and the silent auction will end at 6:30 pm.
