Horn in on great music

Join the Dmitri Matheny Group at the Lincoln City Cultural Center on Wednesday, July 13, as they celebrate the release of their new album, “Cascadia.”

All About Jazz calls the Dmitri Matheny Group “an all-star jazz band featuring some of the most accomplished musicians in the western United States.”

“Cascadia” is Matheny’s 12th album as band leader, and offers inspired performances of timeless classics and original jazz from the Pacific Northwest. The album showcases six new Matheny originals including the evocative title track, “Cascadia.”

“We set out to celebrate the sound and spirit of our beloved home region, its luminous wonders, enchanted forests, healing waters and vibrant creative community,” Matheny said. “There’s an aspirational sense of place here in the upper left. I believe our music reflects that life-affirming ethos.”

A flugelhornist and composer, Matheny has been lauded by the San Francisco Chronicle as “one of the jazz world’s most talented horn players.”

He is an honors graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy and the Berklee College of Music, and vaulted onto the jazz scene in the 1990s as the protégé of jazz legend Art Farmer. Since then he has garnered critical acclaim and a loyal international following, touring extensively throughout the US, Europe and Asia. He has appeared on 120 recordings and has released 12 albums as a leader.

Matheny has been active in the Pacific Northwest jazz scene since 1995.

He will be joined for the Lincoln City concert by Adam Harris on tenor saxophone, Bill Anschell on piano, Eric Gruber on bass and Michael Raynor on drums.

The concert starts at 7 pm. Tickets are $35 for adults, $32 for seniors and $20 for kids. The Lincoln City Cultural Center is located at 540 NE Hwy. 101. For more information, go to lincolncity-culturalcenter.org or call 541-994-9994.
