Of Shakespeare’s roughly 40 published plays, few are as performed, filmed and quoted as  “Hamlet.” Check out National Theatre Live’s production, starring Academy Award nominee Benedict Cumberbatch, on screen in HD at the Newport Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, Feb. 28.

As a country arms itself for war, a family tears itself apart. Forced to avenge his father’s death but paralyzed by the task ahead, Hamlet rages against the impossibility of his predicament, threatening both his sanity and the security of the state.

Cumberbatch, seen in “Doctor Strange,” “Sherlock,” “The Imitation Game” and “Star Trek: Into Darkness,” takes on the title role in the Bard’s great tragedy, in a performance The Guardian called “infinitely touching.”

With wit, charm, genuine anguish and palpable swagger, Cumberbatch delivers a performance that is equal parts revolutionary reinvention and classically conventional. A portrayal that epitomizes and elevates one of the most tortured characters in history.

Originally recorded at Barbican Theatre in London, this incredible live-filmed theatrical production has now been seen by more than 900,000 people worldwide. With lavish costumes and sets, a writer for Time Out called it “one of the most visually and atmospherically stunning productions I’ve ever seen, of anything, ever,” while a review in Variety called it “a Hamlet for a world on the edge: a warning from history, and a plea for new ideas from a new generation.”

Audiences should note that this play contains murder…murder most foul.

The screening begins at 7 pm at the Newport Performing Arts Center, 777 W Olive Street. Tickets range from $15 to $20. For more information, go to coastarts.org or call 541-265-2787.
