Illumination from the Arctic Circle

Take a ride with members of the Yaquina Birders and Naturalists to the “Land of the Midnight Sun” during a naturalist presentation by Roy W. Lowe in Newport on Wednesday, May 17.

In June 2019, Lowe and friends traveled to Utqiagvik (Barrow), Alaska, the northernmost city in the United States, located 330 miles north of the Arctic Circle. The surrounding area is the seasonal home to a variety of migratory birds that come from far and wide to breed during the brief summer period. The visit was timed to observe and photograph birds during the peak period of activity when they are establishing territories, building nests and laying eggs. The sun never sets in June, providing around the clock opportunities to observe and photograph birds.

Lowe is an avid local photographer and birder. He was employed with the US Fish and Wildlife Service for more than 37 years until his retirement in 2015.

The presentation begins at 6:30 pm at the OSU Extension Lincoln County, located at 1211 SE Bay Blvd. in Newport.
