In a class of her own

The Newport Visual Arts Center’s new exhibit, “Educate the Girls of the World” features paintings by award-winning artist Margaret Godfrey. Her work will be on display from Friday, May 5. through June 24 in the Olive Street Gallery — a satellite exhibition space located inside the center.

A reception and artist talk will be held at 5 pm on Wednesday, June 7.

The paintings, which Godfrey describes as a “series of hope,” are inspired by a global issue — barriers and lack of access to education among young women and girls. Each piece incorporates fabric, patterns, architecture, landscapes, or cultural symbols representing countries, cultures and diverse communities with low schooling among females. Outstretched hands call to mind children in a classroom, ready to learn. They reach for the infinity symbol — representing an inner craving for unlimited knowledge.

“We are excited to present Margaret Godfrey’s powerful and inspiring work on the issue of girls’ education,” Director Chasse Davidson said. “Her paintings shine a light on inequity, but they are also, ultimately, uplifting. Each is a call to action, urging us to consider how we can play a part in ensuring women worldwide have the opportunity to reach their full potential.”

In addition to the exhibit, Godfrey will teach the three-day watercolor/acrylic painting workshop “Playing with Patterns,” on June 6, 7 and 8.

The Olive Street Gallery is located at 777 W Olive Street and is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 am to 5 pm and one hour before all public performances at the Newport Performing Arts Center. For more information on the show and upcoming workshop, go tocoastarts.org.
