Library welcomes kids to the fold

The Newport Public Library is welcoming back the littles, and not so littles, with new and returning programs.

For the youngest library friends, weekly programming will begin Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 10:30 am with Toddler Time, hosted by Youth Services Supervisor Linda Annable. Toddler Time is geared for children up to the age of three and their adults, although older children are also welcome to join. Each session features books, songs and stories. The relaxed, welcoming environment gives toddlers a wonderful introduction to the joys of reading and all that the library has to offer.

On Wednesdays, starting on Oct. 5 at 10:30 am, Youth Services Librarian Vanessa Clausing will host Preschool Storytime, aimed to gently introduce preschoolers, aged three to five, to the skills they need to become successful readers and classroom participants. Each session will include stories, songs, rhymes and crafts. Adults are encouraged to participate with their kids.

Each Thursday, beginning Oct. 6 at 5:30 pm, join Bilingual Community Resource Specialist Rachel Diego Leon and Annable for Bilingual Preschool Storytime. This program is very much like Preschool Storytime, however both English and Spanish will be spoken. All are welcome regardless of native language. The focus is on preschoolers, but all family members are encouraged to attend.

Teen Third Thursday events, geared for sixth through 12th graders, start Oct. 20 at 4 pm.

And, kids can join a new program, a monthly LEGO event β€” First Friday Family LEGO Fun, once a month from 2:30 to 4:30 pm beginning on Friday, Oct. 7. There will not be a library host; parents, adults or an older sibling will need to accompany children younger than 10.

The Newport Public Library is located at 35 NW Nye Street. For more information, go to newportoregon.gov or call 541-265-2153.
