Don’t let the opportunity slip away to scramble over wet rocks in search of free seafood during a guided workshop in Garibaldi on Sunday, May 2.

Wild foods guru Dr. John Kallas will lead an expedition where participants will learn about, identify and gather samples of wild sea vegetables and seashore edibles during low tide, including nori, kombu, sea lettuce, fucus, alaria, laminaria, stir fry seaweed and more.

The trek will include climbing up and down some large and potentially slippery rocks to get to the beach, so rugged shoes are recommended.

Kallas is the owner, operator and instructor at Wild Food Adventures outdoor school. He also manages the Institute for the Study of Edible Wild Plants and Other Foragables and has been teaching about wild foods since 1978. He is the author of “Edible Wild Plants: Wild Foods from Dirt to Plate,” the first volume of a planned multi-volume book series.

Kallas’ multiple college degrees include a doctorate in nutrition and a master’s in education. He is a trained botanist, nature photographer, writer and researcher who has taught and trained thousands of people about wild foods all over North America and given hundreds of wild food presentations to a variety of groups. He has amassed one of the largest personal wild food libraries in the country and continues to build on his collection of thousands of images of edible wild plants, processing techniques and finished dishes.

The workshop will last roughly three hours. Cost is $35 to $60, sliding scale. Children under seven are free and over seven pay their age.

The group will meet at 10:15 am in the parking area south of Lumberman’s Memorial Park at 206 American Avenue.
