Embracing current conditions, the Newport-based theater troupe Porthole Players is providing some comedic relief with “Bad Auditions On Camera,” presented online on Saturday and Sunday, March 13 and 14.

Ian McWethy and Carrie McCrossen created the comedy during the time of COVID-19, writing it specifically to perform virtually.

The story is about a casting director looking for a replacement for a major character in a television courtroom drama. She must cast it in one day and, as the title implies, she and her assistant see some of the worst auditions ever. The funny play makes gentle jibes at theater, auditions and actors.

Director Jennifer Hamilton selected the script and held online auditions, casting people who will be familiar to viewers and some new faces as well.

With the assistance of online stage manager Linda Capshaw, costumer Rebecah Sorensen and videographer Robin Wedertz, Hamilton held rehearsals for six weekends to prepare for the performance.

The link for viewing “Bad Auditions On Camera” will be posted for free at www.portholeplayers.com or the Porthole Players Facebook page.
