Oregon art through the ages

Spellbinding art that captures Oregon’s magic will fill the Hoffman Gallery in Manzanita from this Friday, April 1, through May 1. The exhibit includes traditional 19th Century landscape paintings, impressionist views of the North Coast and vibrant abstractions from the 1940s and 50s.

The exhibit was inspired by the recently published second edition of “Oregon Painters, Landscape to Modernism, 1859-1959,” by Ginny Allen and Jody Klevit.

An opening reception and book signing with the authors will take place on Saturday, April 2, at 2 pm.

The exhibit is a guided tour of exceptional, early Oregon artists’ 100-year stylistic evolution.

Many paintings in the exhibit originated in Manzanita.

The authors spent years gathering information about Oregon’s early painters and compiling it in this encyclopedic coffee table book.

The exhibit showcases many of the color reproductions used in the book. The beautiful, historic paintings, borrowed from private collections, are rarely available for public viewing, making this a “must see” exhibition for those interested in both regional fine art and Oregon history.

The book is available through Oregon State University Press and found at many local bookstores.

The Hoffman Center for the Arts is located at 594 Laneda Avenue in Manzanita and is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 pm. For more information, go to hoffmanarts.org or call 503-368-3846.
