Sail! Everyone must go.

If your kid has started dropping nautical terms into their speech or turning up at the breakfast table wearing a captain’s hat, they might be hinting that they want to join the Yaquina Bay Yacht Club youth sailing team.

The youth sailing program is run in partnership with Lincoln County School District and the Oregon Boating Foundation, making it available to kinds in grades 8 through 12 throughout Lincoln County. The only prerequisite is that students are able to swim.

Led by Head Coach Greg Krutzikowsky, the team will compete with other high schools throughout the northwest in racing small sailboats.

Boats, instruction and coaching are provided by the yacht club and students meet and have the land-based portion of their learning at the Oregon Boating Foundation float house located at Port Dock 7 at the Port of Newport on the north side of Yaquina Bay.

The season is from March 9 through May 8. Practices are on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4 to 7 pm with some exceptions.

A parent-athlete meeting will be held at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, Feb. 23, at the clubhouse, located at 750 SE Bay Blvd. in Newport. For more information, go to yaquinabayyachtclub.org.
