Some seedy goings on

There aren’t many places in our green state that you can throw a rock without hitting a tree. Even so, their importance means we can never have too many.

Join Lincoln City and Newport, both Tree City USA communities, in celebrating our foliated friends as we wrap up Arbor Month with family-friendly activities and plant giveaways.

Beginning at 4 pm on Friday, April 30, Lincoln City Parks and Recreation, Lincoln City Oregon Indian Education and Driftwood Public Library will be hosting a celebration at the Lincoln City Community Center. Learn from experts about how a tree grows, enjoy hands-on activities and try the Story Walk around the center of “A Day with Yayah” by Nicole I. Campbell.

Free tree seedlings will be available.

Next, from 2 to 4 pm on Saturday, May 1, the Newport Recreation Center is partnering with the Newport Public Library for a drive-through event. Pull up in front of the library on 35 NW Nye Street and someone will bring a Western Red Cedar seedling, available to the first 100 cars to arrive, or a flower seed kit, info packets and more, right to your car.

The library will also be posting tree facts on its Facebook page along with a riddle to lead people to one of two mystery trees.  Find one and post a selfie with it, and you will be entered into a drawing to win a book about Pacific Northwest trees.

For more information, go to the Lincoln City Parks and Recreation page or the Newport Parks and Recreation page on Facebook.
