Sounds pretty fly
Variety is always the name of the game when the Audubon Society of Lincoln City embarks on one of its bird walks. And the next two planned excursions, this Friday, Sept. 8, and Saturday, Sept. 9, will explore a variety of environments, too.
Friday, Sept. 8
Cutler City Open Space and Siletz Bay
In this unique wooded wetlands habitat at the south end of Lincoln City, large trees host species such as pileated woodpeckers, while the marshy brush is home to common yellowthroats and other songbirds. The group will look for early fall migrants, then move on to the Siletz Bay to watch for migrating shorebirds.
Meet at 9 am at the pull-out on SW 63rd Street.
Saturday, Sept. 9
Bayocean Spit
The spit separates a freshwater lake, Tillamook Bay and the Pacific Ocean and is a prime location for viewing migrating and vagrant bird species. The habitat attracts more than 230 bird species — from seabirds and shorebirds to waterfowl, hummingbirds and raptors.
Meet at 10 am in the parking lot at the end of the gravel road. There is a day-use fee of $10 per car.
All the group’s bird walks are easy to moderately easy and no pre-registration or experience is required. Binoculars and guidebooks are provided. Walks are held rain or shine, so dress appropriately for coastal weather and muddy trails and be sure to carry water. For more information, go to lincolncityaudubon.org.
