Sparks and recreation at solstice

When the Earth’s axis is tilted farthest away from the sun, the Yachats community gathers for an annual celebration at the Yachats Commons Pavilion. On Thursday, Dec. 21, the Winter Solstice celebration will begin at 4 pm and go until 7 pm or, “until the bonfire goes out.”

The gathering includes cookies, popcorn, music and dancing.

A variety of chilis, including vegan, will be available.

Morgen Silverhorn and friends will entertain and lead an acoustic instrument jam session. Please bring your own instrument.

Winter solstice is the shortest day of the year. This year, winter officially begins at 7:27 pm. Then the days become longer leading up to the summer solstice and the longest day of the year.

Historically, celebrations of the winter solstice are happy acknowledgements of the increasing daylight hours.

The Yachats Commons is located at 441 Hwy. 101 N.

Book your solstice celebration at Driftwood Public Library

Winter solstice is a time for quiet reflection. Unless you are at Driftwood Public Library in Lincoln City, where two events on Thursday, Dec. 21, will wrap up with some noisy fun.

At 10:30 am, a special story time will feature tales of Winter Solstice then end with a noise parade and a winter-themed craft project.

Later, from 6 to 8 pm, musicians, poets and storytellers of all ages are welcome to participate in a special Winter Solstice open mic. Or, head to the community room to create a family-friendly luminary craft. Feeling reflective? Take a quiet moment on the meditation spiral to reflect on the past year and set your intentions for the year to come. And no Winter Solstice would be complete without cookies and the parade of noise at 7:30 pm.
