Straw poll gets results

As part of their overall goal to trick out the campus for Halloween, staff at Lakeview Senior Living hosted a scarecrow-making contest on Monday, Oct. 26.

“Last year, we had more than 450 people here for Halloween,” said Executive Director Jennifer Whitmyer. “We had trick or treating, costume contests, crafts … it was so great! This year, because of the pandemic, we are still hosting a trick or treat event, but we were trying to come up with other socially distant ways to still have fun.”

Teams were invited to put up their scarecrows on the Lakeview campus representing a business, organization, family or a group of friends.

Christine Nair made a “Zoom Scarecrow” with her mom, Casandra. He sports a jacket and tie ensemble paired with pajama pants and unicorn slippers.

“He’s all business from the belt up,” Christine said. “He’s kind of my life right now. We had so much fun shopping for him at the Goodwill.”

Caregiver Jamie Hofmann saw the announcement for the contest and mentioned it to her co-workers at Aging Wisely.

“They suggested I do an homage to Ruth Bader Ginsburg,” Hofmann said. “I didn’t know that much about her so they filled me in and I was like, ‘Jeez, no pressure guys.’  I hope I did her justice.”

“We didn’t get as large of a turnout as we were hoping for,” said Community Relations Director Joy Wilson. “But what we lacked in numbers was more than made up for by the creativity and enthusiasm the teams put into their creations. We got quite a few local businesses; Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital even built two.”

Lakeview’s staff and residents will continue to decorate the campus with Halloween lights and lots of spooky decorations until Halloween, Saturday, Oct. 31, and the scarecrows will remain on display through Sunday, Nov. 1. The entire community is invited to walk or drive through Lakeview’s campus to enjoy the scary fun.

“We want everyone to feel welcome to enjoy the decorations,” Wilson said. “We’re only asking for food donations in the barrels we will have in our front entryway until Halloween night. Please bring non-perishable food for people or pets to fill barrels for the Lincoln City Food Pantry.”

The socially-distant walk- or drive-through trick or treat event on Halloween runs from 5:30 to 7 pm at Lakeview senior Living, 2690 NE Yacht Avenue.
