Stop. Hammer time.
Get your motor running, slowly and quietly please, for the final Float-In Brown Bag Concert on Devils Lake, a socially distanced musical gathering best enjoyed from the watercraft of your choice.
Canoe, kayak, SUP or boat to the free concert on Saturday, Sept. 11, to enjoy the upbeat sounds of Chicamarimba, an eight-woman marimba ensemble whose playing radiates with a love of music and deep friendship.
Chicamarimba performs world music, blending traditional African and Latin American rhythms and contemporary favorites for all ages to enjoy.
The group was started in 2000, when eight friends decided to learn something new, and collectively attended a marimba class.
The marimba is a musical instrument that resembles a xylophone. There are many different types of marimbas and styles of marimba music played all over the world. Chicamarimba plays Zimbabwean marimba music on Zimbabwean marimbas, which have wooden keys and buzzed resonators.
The fun rhythms, singing in the Shona language and learning about the Zimbabwean culture kept the group interested long enough that they decided to begin performing together.
Unlike previous concerts in the series, which were performed on the floating platform created for the Devils Lake Independence Day fireworks display, this show will be performed from shore, just off Sandpoint.
The only access during the show will be from the water, with a boat-restriction area established around the stage. Boaters are also asked to operate in a no-wake manner while in the eastern half of the lake. Social distance monitors will add an extra layer of safety as they help remind the audience of the need to keep distance between each other on the lake.
The audience is encouraged to pack their favorite brown bag dinner and float-in to enjoy the band during the 90-minute show.
The concert will begin at 6 pm. For more information, including a map to the concert site, go to dlakeoregon.com.
