Take a deep dive into sculpture

Go deep into a new exhibit from the Pacific Northwest Sculptors group when “Into the Depths” opens at the Newport Visual Arts Center this Friday, June 2.

An opening reception for this and two other exhibits will be held on Friday from 5 to 9 pm. The event will feature live music by guitarist Skip Trantow and wine and light refreshments. Artist talks begin at 7 pm.

Portland-based Pacific Northwest Sculptors showcases artists from diverse backgrounds, who create in a wide array of mediums and styles. A nonprofit educational organization formed in 2000 by a handful of dedicated sculptors, the group engages and serves students, beginners, emerging artists and regional and internationally recognized sculptors from throughout the Pacific Northwest region. Their members are “united by a desire to further the art of sculpture, and dedicated to sharing knowledge, inspiration and creative opportunities with one another, our home communities, and the art world at large.”

“Oregon Coast Council for the Arts is delighted to welcome Pacific Northwest Sculptors back to the Runyan Gallery,” Visual Arts Center Director Chasse Davidson said. “We share their mission to offer opportunities for growth and exposure to artists of varying backgrounds and experience.  Being able to witness this scope and magnitude of sculptor work under one roof will be a treat.”

In addition to viewing works of art at the show, community members can learn to create three-dimensional art of their own. Russ Ford, one of the artists participating in the exhibit, will be leading a two-part raku fired mask workshop on June 3 and 10. Space is limited and there is a fee to participate, however, scholarships are available.

“Into the Depths” runs through July 29 at the Newport Visual Arts Center, located at 777 NW Beach Drive, available to view Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 4 pm. For more information, go to coastarts.org or call 541-265-6540.
