Central Coast parks and recreation departments have done a bang-up job planning two upcoming free concerts by the Pan Wizards Steel Orchestra.
A large and unique musical group from the Seattle area, the Pan Wizards are the flagship ensemble of Steel Magic Northwest, a non-profit organization founded and directed by internationally known steelpan specialist Gary Gibson.
“You’d have to travel several hours to find another group like ours, with bands large enough to sound orchestral while performing music of this artistic level,” he said. “Those who witness a good, tight, 30-plus piece steel orchestra don’t soon forget it.”
Recognized as one of the top high-school-level steelband groups in the US, the Wizards will perform a widely varied repertoire of classical, pop, samba, salsa, calypso and soca music, including music by the Beatles, the late Trinidadian calypso great Lord Kitchener, Georges Bizet and Earth Wind & Fire.
Most of the group members have been playing the steelpan since fifth or sixth grade while climbing the ladder of ranked bands that the organization provides.
The programs are both family friendly.
