Tidings from Toledo
As spring arrives in Toledo, the iconic cherry trees and flower boxes lining the charming downtown streets bloom with color, perfectly complementing the town's artistic flair.
On Saturday and Sunday, March 5 and 6, the monthly First Weekend event will once again provide opportunities to meet artists and have a look at what’s new in the town’s galleries and studios.
On Main Street, Crow’s Nest Studio & Gallery will feature the works of 15 local and regional artists, including the photography of Sylvia Hosie. Hosie is a fine art and travel photographer whose work reflects a deep love for both the American West and the Oregon Coast, which she calls home.
Other featured artists at Crow’s Nest include founder and assemblage artist Janet Runger; art; Alice Haga, fused glass; Val Bolen, tile and ceramic pieces; Paula Teplitz, sculptural jellyfish mobiles; Jeff Gibford, digitally manipulated photographs; Tish Epperson, watercolors; Yelizaveta Bhaktina, oil paintings; and Susan Jones, woven fiber jellyfish.
Crow’s Nest Gallery & Studio is located at 305 N Main Street and is open on Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm.
At the Yaquina River Museum of Art, the Founder’s Sale Show continues for a final month in the School House Exhibit Space. The show features art from the museum’s private collection of founding artists, including Michael Gibbons, Dee Boyles and William Shumway. Prominently displayed on the walls of the museum is “Dawn Near Eddyville,” a pastoral piece by Gibbons featuring a gigantic spruce tree. A few years ago, Lincoln County resident Patricia Plunkett Holler saw this painting in an article and realized it was a painting of the tree on her ancestral farm. Her paternal great-grandfather had originally planted the tree not long after her family settled in the area.
“When [my father] was quite a small boy, he stood beside his grandfather Zumwalt and watched him plant [the] little spruce tree near the road that went by their land,” she said. “That had to have happened somewhere right around 1900.”
The Yaquina River Museum of Art is located at 151 NE Alder Street and is open on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 pm. For more information, go to yaquinarivermuseumofart.org
Across the street at Michael Gibbons’ Signature Gallery, “Treasure Island Seascape” will be featured on the walls of the intimate gallery space. The oil painting features crashing waves of the Pacific against rugged intertidal rock formations on a summer day. The painting was shown at the Laguna Art Museum at an invitational exhibit featuring artists from the Laguna Plein Air Painters, of which Michael Gibbons was a member.
Michael Gibbons’ Signature Gallery is located at 140 NE Alder Street and is open on Saturday and Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm. For more information, go to michaelgibbons.net.
