What to do if you wind up in Yachats

The Pacific Coast Wind Ensemble, a concert band with members from the coast and Willamette Valley, will present its second annual free Labor Day concert at the Yachats Commons Pavilion on Monday, Sept.4.

The program consists of Sousa marches, Americana medleys, University of Oregon and OSU fight songs, novelties and a very familiar German tune to mark the upcoming Yachats Oktoberfest.

The band, led by conductors Evelyn Archer, Ernie Hills and Edd Restivo, currently has about 30 members. Skill levels range from professional to “I just picked up my instrument after 30 years and I want to play it again,” and ages range from high school to senior citizen.

Typically, the group performs four formal concerts a year, plus less formal events such as Waldport’s Beachcomber Days.

Guests are advised to bring a portable chair or stool as seating is limited. The concert is free, but donations to the Pacific Coast Wind Ensemble would be greatly appreciated.

The ensemble is always looking for new members and welcomes all wind and percussion players without audition. Currently the most needed instruments are French horn, clarinet, and tympani.

The concert begins at 1 pm at the Yachats Commons Pavilion, located at 441 N Hwy. 101. For more information, go to pcwindensemble.org.
