A handy skill

What better way to christen a new art space than to invite a bunch of kids to make things with their hands?

Students in grades six through eight are invited to “Play with Clay,” a four-week series on Wednesdays, from Feb. 16 through March 9 in the newly redeveloped clay studio at the Newport Visual Arts Center.

“We are thrilled to offer the VAC this initial series of ceramics classes for youth,” Oregon Coast Council for the Arts Director Tom Webb said. “This will be the first step in offering clay classes for both youth and adults.”

Students will first learn about clay and then make pinch pots. They will then continue to explore working with clay slabs and create objects such as tiles, masks or frames. From there, they will add color to their works with glazes and discover the magic of what emerges from a kiln.

Newport artist Eileen Hearne will serve as the instructor.

As the classes are progressive, students will need to attend all four sessions. Registration is $45, though some scholarships are available. Class size is limited to six students.

Classes will be held from 3 to 5 pm at the Newport Visual Arts Center, located at 777 NW Beach Drive. To register, email ssiggelkow@coastarts.org or call 541-574-3364. For more information, go to coastarts.org.
