Find out what’s shakin’
You can’t fault people in Pacific Northwest coastal communities for fearing earthquakes, including “The Really Big One.”
On Wednesday, March 16, at the Hatfield Marine Science Center’s Science on Tap presentation, Peter Ruggiero will put a few tools in our mental preparedness toolbox with the online talk, "How do Cascadia coastal communities increase their resilience to coastal hazards?"
Ruggiero is the director of The Cascadia Coastlines and Peoples Hazards Research Hub and a professor in OSU's College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences.
The talk will cover coastal risks in addition to earthquakes, tsunamis, sea-level rise, landslides, erosion and increased precipitation.
Cascadia communities from Cape Mendocino, California, through Oregon and Washington to Vancouver Island, Canada, are calling for a coordinated research agenda among universities, governmental agencies, NGOs and others to help them achieve resilience.
Ruggerio will discuss how the hub is addressing this call to increase coastal communities' ability to adapt and respond to these hazards.
The talk begins at 6 pm via Zoom. For more information, go to hmsc.oregonstate.edu or call 541-867-0126.
