Catch ‘Art on the Edge’ and ‘Covert Rose’ in Lincoln City

“7th Generation Neskowin” by Michael Schlicting

The latest show at Lincoln City’s Chessman Gallery is guaranteed to take visitors to the edge.

The exhibit features work by artists taking part in this summer’s Art on the Edge Studio Tour — which offers a behind-the-scenes look at the creative spaces of the Central Oregon Coast.

“This started because we have such a rich and incredible artistic community here,” said tour organizer Krista Eddy. “We wanted to harness that and showcase this area as a place known for art.”

Running from Friday, June 16, through Sunday, June 18, the tour includes 26 sites and some 70 artists working in everything from oil and acrylic painting to metal sculpture, glassblowing, fire painting and more.

Taking part in the tour for the first time this year is nationally acclaimed artist Michael Schlicting, who will welcome guests to his Hawk Creek Gallery in Neskowin.

Schlicting’s works aim to capture mood, feeling and universal longing rather than literal, physical realism. His multi-layered work is rooted in the abstract forms of nature. His paintings hang in more than 2,500 public, corporate and private collections around the world.

Among the many other artists displaying work at the show are Nora Sherwood, a science illustrator who infuses detailed accuracy and advocacy into her art; and Maria Esther Sund who primarily does collage and mixed media to make beautifully rich and layered pieces that evoke a sense of ease and nostalgia.

“Eye of the Storm” By Rose Covert

Meanwhile, the Lincoln City Fiber Arts Gallery will showcase “Covert Rose,” a new exhibit featuring natural sculptural works by Portland artist Rose Covert.

Using reimagined basketry techniques, Covert creates woven landscapes that twist and travel around themselves. Her pieces hold an element of dance and movement and pull the viewer in with their dynamic tensions.

Covert works entirely with plants that grow within a 60-mile radius of Portland. Some of her work is comprised of plants she grows herself and the rest is from plants she either tends or harvests on a regular basis. She finds inspiration in the natural world, the exquisiteness of elemental forms and landscapes, as well as the habitats the plants grow in.

Since 2014, Covert has been a member and board member of the Columbia Basin Basketry Guild, where she continues to learn a wide range of weaving techniques. She has been an attending artist at Frogwood, an artist collaborative event located in Oregon, and has been on the board of Frogwood since 2020.

Both shows open this Friday, May 26, with a public reception from 5 to 7 pm offering light refreshments and the chance to meet many of the artists.

The Chessman Gallery is located inside the Lincoln City Cultural Center, located at 540 NE Hwy. 101.
