Get schooled on sharks

With “Sharknado” a distant memory and “Sharks on a Plane” still awaiting the greenlight from cowardly studio executives, all eyes for shark-related entertainment turn to Sharktoberfest this Saturday, Oct. 14, in Newport.

Hosted by the Big Fish Lab at Hatfield Marine Science Center, the event promises an afternoon of fun crafts, food, beer and wine, a live shark dissection and conversations with real shark scientists. Guests can also enjoy a screening of a Shark Week film featuring members of the Big Fish Lab research group, followed by a Q&A.

Food and beverages will be provided by Pelican Brewing, OSU's Southern Oregon Research and Extension Center and Ultralife Cafe.

Sharktoberfest will run from 3 to 7 pm at the Hatfield Marine Science Center, 2030 SE Marine Science Drive.

Tickets are $25, with all proceeds going directly to supporting shark research.

For more information or to buy tickets, check out the “Sharktober Fest” page on Facebook.
