Beak House: ‘The Seagull’ screens in Newport

Anton Chekhov’s classic play “The Seagull” will fill the big screen at the Newport Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, Oct. 18, as National Theatre Live returns to the coast.

Following his critically acclaimed five-star production of Cyrano de Bergerac, Jamie Lloyd brings Anya Reiss’ updated adaptation of Chekhov’s work to the stage. A young woman is desperate for fame and a way out. A young man is pining after the woman of his dreams. A successful writer longs for a sense of achievement. An actress wants to fight the changing of the times. In an isolated home in the countryside, dreams lie in tatters, hopes are dashed, and hearts broken. With nowhere left to turn, the only option is to turn on each other.

Emilia Clarke, known for her roles in “Game of Thrones,” “Me Before You,” and “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” makes her West End debut in this 21st-Century retelling exploring love and loneliness. The production also stars Indira Varma, Tom Rhys Harries, Sophie Wu, Daniel Monks and Robert Glenister.

“The Seagull” was filmed live at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London’s West End.

Wednesday’s screening will start at 7 pm at the Newport Performing Arts Center, 777 W Olive Street.

Tickets, $15 to $20, are available at the box office; by calling 541-265-2787; or online at www.coastarts.org/events/ntlive-seagull.

The Oregon Coast Council for the Arts will bring National Theatre Live to Newport on select Wednesday evenings throughout 2023 and 2024. To view upcoming titles, go to www.coastarts.org/ntlive.
