Manzanita: a very ar-tea place

The December show at Manzanita’s Hoffman Center for the Arts will feature paintings by Dennis Worrel and Melissa Young along with a special exhibit of teapots made by local artists.

A reception will be held on Saturday, Dec. 3, during which some of the artists will speak about their work and answer questions.

Worrel is a painter and printmaker living on the North Oregon Coast. He worked as a soil scientist for more than 35 years, studying forest and desert landscapes across the western US. He is a founding member of Arts Accelerated and a member of Print Arts Northwest. For this show, Worrel painted and drew over botanical dye prints created by fellow artist and partner, Christine Harrison. In this series, he calls attention to the natural world around us, encouraging connection and exploring our spiritual force of nature.

Young’s mixed media work series for the show, titled “Time Will Tell,” is a series of portraits inspired by the family photos and history of the artist’s maternal grandfather. Young is drawn to figure and portrait sketching, particularly working with the female form, as well as art journaling.

A variety of local artists will be featured in the Teapot Show. All the teapots will be functional, and represent a wide range of styles, shapes and techniques.

The Saturday, Dec. 3, opening reception runs from 2 to 4 pm. The Hoffman Gallery is located at 594 Laneda Avenue, Manzanita, and is open Friday through Sunday from 1 to 4 pm. For more information go to hoffmanarts.org or call 503-368-3846.
