Marine debris retreat washes up in Wheeler

Heart of Cartm, the North County’s home base for artful waste reduction, is recycling last year’s popular Marine Debris Transformation Retreat.

This year’s immersive and inspiring event will take place this Friday, Nov. 3, through Sunday, Nov. 5, providing a unique opportunity for anyone passionate about coastal conservation, art and positive change.

Marine debris is a pressing issue affecting communities worldwide. At this retreat, marine debris becomes a symbol of transformation. Whether you're an artist, a scientist or someone who simply cares about the coastline, this weekend promises to be a catalyst for change. Guests will create powerful works of art and writing that can inspire change.

On Friday afternoon, the Leaders Lecture features Elizabeth Roberts, marine debris artist and clean oceans advocate; Courtney Edwards from the Elakha Alliance; Jesse Jones of Oregon Shores; Denise Harrington, 2022 Teacher at Sea for NOAA; and Wendy Jackson, psychotherapist. Tickets can be purchased for the Friday lecture only.

On Saturday morning, guests will conduct a NOAA Marine Debris Monitoring Assessment shoreline survey, gathering crucial data for future conservation efforts and then taking their finds back to the Heart of Cartm workshop for transformation. On Sunday morning, participants will engage in writing and group discussions.
