Tune in for this tour

The Newport Symphony Orchestra is tuning up for a fun, interactive new series: "Musician's Living Room."

During these four evenings, beginning on Saturday, Oct. 24, orchestra stars will take you on an intimate tour.

“They will share their fascinating collections of instruments, perform and share their lives as musicians in Newport and beyond,” said NSO music director Adam Flatt. “You will share conversations with the musicians, and me, as we welcome you into their homes and lives.”

Kicking off the series, Rachel Dobrow Stone will present, “The world of percussion.”

A percussionist with NSO and other orchestras in the Pacific Northwest, Stone will demonstrate instruments from her personal collection. She is a graduate of Harvard and the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University.

“I am looking forward to treating members of the Newport Symphony community to an exciting, intimate, behind-the-scenes look at the orchestra’s most diverse section,” Stone said. “I will be streaming live from my home and will show some of my extensive collection of fascinating percussion instruments from all over the world. I also plan to talk about my eclectic background and demonstrate instruments I have played on the Newport Symphony stage, as well as instruments you may have never seen or heard before.”

The series continues on Saturday, Nov. 21, with Katherine Evans,” All about trumpets.”

Evans is the principal trumpet of the NSO. In addition to her symphony playing, she has a secondary career focus in baroque music, both in the baroque trumpet sub-specialty and as a vocalist. She will demonstrate her rare, handmade Spanish trumpet and other instruments, and will share her life as a brass player of unusual versatility. Evans is a Harvard graduate and a resident of Vancouver, BC.

Watch alone, or host a small gathering for the same price: All four evenings are $100 per household, with presentations starting at 6:30 pm. A single ticket purchase for Saturday, Oct. 24, is $30.
