Pick the bucket, in Newport
Portland-based junkbox blues band Hillstomp brings its refreshing and distinctive brand of do-it-yourself hill country blues stomp to Newport’s Primaltones Community Venue this Friday, Dec. 17.
The duo digs through the dumps and forgotten backwoods of American music and recycles traditional sounds into something entirely new.
The band features Henry Christian, aka Hurricane Henry on guitar and John Johnson, aka Lord Johnny Buckets on, you guessed it, the buckets.
You’ll hear North Mississippi trance blues, a bit of Appalachia and a dash of punkabilly as it comes clanging and tumbling from assorted buckets, cans and BBQ lids, all drenched in rambunctious slide guitar. Somehow it works.
Despite their homemade instruments and novel approach, Hillstomp is no novelty act — its music was featured in the third season of the hit show "Sons of Anarchy.”
Known for unique versions of traditional material and energetic live performances, the duo is also known for original material, including "Northeast Portland 3AM," "Lucy's Lament" and "Graverobber's Blues.”
The 21-and-over show begins at 7:30 pm, and tickets are $20. The Primaltones Community Venue is located at 2925 SE Ferry Slip Road. For more information, go to primaltones.com.
