Pop in for a dance

The Central Oregon Coast’s own Lincoln Pops Orchestra will be swinging and hopping at the Newport Elks Lodge this Saturday, Nov. 12.

The lively event is a fund-raiser for scholarships supporting Lincoln County women students.

Led by John Bringetto, the Pops is dedicated to preserving and passing along the heritage of the big band era. Members include current and retired professional musicians, band directors and present and former high school and college players.

With five saxophones, six trumpets, four trombones, piano, guitar, bass, drums, congas, vibraphone and four vocalists, the Pops put on a dynamic show. They will be playing music from the swing era, Latin, blues and hard-driving jazz.

The Elks Club, with an ample dance floor and plenty of seating, also offers a cash bar. Light snacks will be provided.

This evening of dance and fun is sponsored by the Newport chapter of Philanthropic Education Organization, a nonprofit group that has helped more than 100,000 women worldwide pursue goals by providing more than $350 million in educational assistance. The Newport chapter awards annual scholarships to outstanding Oregon Coast Community College female students, as well as scholarships for students in the state of Oregon and nationwide.

The event begins at 7 pm. Tickets are $20 per person at the door, cash or check. The Elks Lodge is located at 45 SE Moore Drive in Newport. For more information, call 541-272-9597.
