Put on your Son de best

Enjoy a festive evening with a Latin flair with a concert from Son de Cuba, delicious desserts, a silent auction and other ways to support the independent St. James Santiago School this Saturday, May 14, at the Lincoln City Cultural Center.

“Each year, SJSS focuses its study on a select part of the world, and this year the students are learning more about Central and South America,” Administrator Julie Fieldler said. “We use our social studies, literacy and arts classes to explore the geography and culture of those regions. All year, students have been doing plays located in South America and based on folktales from Central and South America. In their art classes with Krista Eddy Alexander they have followed a story about a sea voyage to South America, creating art and learning art techniques as they travel from place to place.”

A grant received through the Lincoln County Cultural Coalition funded not only Son de Cuba’s appearance at the fund-raiser, but a flute-making and dance workshop from local Ecuadoran band Chayag earlier this year and a South American drum-building project for 5th through 8th graders.

“We are very grateful for the funding to extend our studies and to bring music to our students and the larger community,” Fiedler said. “We love hosting concerts at the Lincoln City Cultural Center and sharing what we’ve been learning with the larger community. Son de Cuba has musicians from Chile, Mexico, the US and Cuba, play all kinds of Latin music and came highly recommended by [cultural center director] Niki Price. They promise an energetic, danceable blend of music for all ages. We are also grateful to Beachcrest Brewing for donating beer for the event and Sweet Haven Rentals for donating lodging for the band so their members can enjoy a weekend on the coast.”

Son de Cuba is a Portland-based sextet that performs salsa, timba, merengue, Latin jazz and more.

With only six performers, the group produces a full sound and will draw a crowd with their energy and love for the music they play. Dancing is encouraged — the band members might even join you!

The event begins at 6:30 pm at the Lincoln City Cultural Center, located at 540 NE Hwy. 101. Tickets are $25 for adults, $15 for kids aged 11 and younger. For more information, including tickets, call 541-994-2426.
