Snap! Photographers share Spotlight Show
Veteran coastal art photographers Walter Duvall and Andree Devine will share a two-week Spotlight Show at Newport’s Yaquina Art Association Gallery, starting this Saturday, Oct. 14.
Devine’s work entitled “Above and Below the Water” reflects her deep love of all things
aquatic. Her personal interest and her work have taken her on diving trips to distant, warm seas where she has explored reef life with her camera in hand. Her work also reflects the amazing beauty of the Central Coast along with its wildlife.
“Nature and underwater subjects occupy a big space in my heart,” she said.
Duvall has been capturing forms, textures, colors and shifting light for 58 years, and still his love for creating natural images shines through in every piece. As a young man, Duvall was inspired by the photography of Ansel Adams and has studied with notable experts to deepen his own understanding of the art of photography.
“My photography is influenced by three professional photographers,” he said. “First, from Ansel Adams who said, ‘You don’t take a photograph, you make it;’ David Middleton who taught me, ‘Don’t settle for mediocrity’ and ‘Watch the edges of your image;’ lastly Art Wolfe who told me, ‘Don’t take a postcard, look for art in a scene.’ These words follow me every time I venture out to record nature.”
While many of his images might be familiar, viewers are encouraged to look closely at Duvall’s depth and attention to light and detail.
Duvall’s work has won numerous awards and he has donated his time and talent to the Alaska Raptor Center, Sitka Conservation Society, Oregon Coast Community Forest Association and Newport Fishermen’s Wives.
Both Duvall and Devine are active members of the Yaquina Art Association Photographers.
The Spotlight Show will be on display through October 27, at Yaquina Art Association Gallery, located in Nye Beach at 789 NW Beach Drive, open from 11 am to 4 pm every day.
