Building a healthy community at Point Break Fitness

By Eliot Sekuler

For the TODAY

The gleaming new equipment is loosely organized into purpose-driven sections: rows of True branded treadmills, stationary bikes, rowers and ellipticals for cardio workouts, free weights for strength building, a “Sci-Fit” section for rehab and a wide variety of devices for pulling, pressing, raising and stretching those muscles. A class area, equipped with mats, balls and boxing gear is situated at the rear of the gym, just past the manager’s desk where Zeke, an eight-month old shar-pei puppy is usually lying at the feet of Point Break co-owner Tracey Taylor.

It was the intention of Taylor and his wife, Christie Haun, to adopt a “something for everyone” approach to fitness when, in March, 2021, they first opened the doors to the airy, 8,100-square-foot facility located in the center of Lincoln City Outlets shopping center.

“We can help anybody who walks into this gym to feel and live healthier,” Taylor said, “whether they’re young or elderly, a mom who’s caring for her kids or a business owner taking some time to take care of themselves.”

Taylor and Haun also serve as two of the gym’s cadre of personal trainers. Other staffers include teachers of classes in yoga, boot camp, Zumba, circuit training, “HIIT,” “warrior rhythm” and karate for kids and for adults.

“We sit down with everybody and make an evaluation to determine what the game plan would be,” Taylor said. “We offer that consultation as a free service before we even start training. We believe that once you understand the game plan, you can make a more educated decision on which way your training should go.”

Taylor said the gym’s location has been helpful in attracting a mix of locals and visitors, some of whom come upon the gym while shopping and return to make use of the facilities. The clientele is also diverse in age: on any given day, there’s a healthy mix of young people and seniors, some of the latter making use of such insurance programs as Silver Sneakers or Active and Fit, others signing on to very flexible membership plans.

“We keep it very friendly. We don’t use contracts,” he said. “It’s strictly month to month. For us, it’s about being able to put back in the community. A good gym allows anybody and everybody the opportunity to be able to feel comfortable, relaxed and focused enough to take back control of their lives and do what they need to do to live better.”

Point Break Fitness is located at Lincoln City Outlets, 1500 SE East Devils Lake Road in Lincoln City and is open seven days a week, from 4 am to midnight. For more information, go to pointbreaklc.com or call 541-614-4145.
