Chinook Winds Casino Resort puts on an arresting display at Surf City car show
The first US auto show happened so long ago that contemporary advertisements for cars often touted reduction in horse manure on city streets as a selling point.
Well, more than a century later, car shows like Surf City at Chinook Winds Casino Resort fill the summer months as enthusiasts gather to display classic cars, alternative energy autos and glitzy motorcycles and trucks.
The high-octane event will see cool classics, rat rods, 4x4s, lowriders, motorcycles and every description of American muscle car on show in Lincoln City this Saturday, Aug. 26.
Whether you’re out to shine and show your cherished chariot, or simply ready to admire the automotive audacity of others, you won’t be able to steer clear of the fun.
With 34 categories including Best Rat Rod, “You Are Special” and Distance Traveled and age categories all the way from 1939 to the modern era, there is something for every enthusiast to enjoy.
Day-of-event registration is $20 and opens at 8 am. Judging will be held from 10 am to 1 pm, with awards at 4 pm. All registration proceeds go to support Angels Anonymous, a local non-profit organization created to assist local residents with basic, immediate needs.
Jennifer Batten and Full Steam will provide live music from 11 am to 3 pm on Saturday. Batten performed with Michael Jackson on albums like “Bad” and “Dangerous” as well as the powerful Superbowl XXVI halftime performance. In January 2016 she received the She Rocks Icon award and was recently inducted into the Guitar Player Magazine’s Gallery of the Greats. The band dresses in classic Steampunk attire and encourages followers to do the same. They offer an energetic fun time filled with top-level ’80s cover music from Toto, Van Halen, Foreigner, Journey, Peter Gabriel and much more.
Sunday’s Sound Off Competition will present wards for the loudest car audio competitors, as well as the best sound quality. Last year’s event raised more than $19,000 for Angels Anonymous and organizers hope to raise even more this year.
Sunday will also see the casino host the Oregon Coast Impalas Lowrider Car and Truck Show, with registration from 8 to 11 am and awards at 4 pm.
Chinook Winds Casino Resort is located at 1777 NW 44th Street in Lincoln City. For more information, go to chinookwindscasino.com.
