Try something NEWT

The Newport Trail Stewards, or NEWTS, was started by outdoor enthusiast Tomas Follet with the goal to create properly constructed trails in open spaces in and around Newport for use by bikers, hikers and runners. One of the main project sites is in the watershed of Big Creek Reservoir, where the first phase of a long-term plan resulted in some highly rideable trails on property owned by the City of Newport.

The best way to learn the trail system is to go to a trail work party, as it’s easy to take a wrong turn and the City doesn't encourage people to go there alone. The next scheduled work party is this Saturday, July 23.

“The NEWTS mission is partially to help fulfill the mission of the Newport Parks and Recreation Department’s master plan for that area, so we’ve been working with the City to help make it happen,” Follet said. “They have been very supportive because we are very careful about safety and building trails properly.”

The trails crisscross coastal forest habitat, climbing and descending through dense Sitka spruce and Douglas fir. Most are suited for beginner and intermediate riders, with a few harder features to negotiate.

Those interested in becoming “Newtists,” can also join a social ride at 6 pm on Wednesday, July 27. The group will meet behind Newport Marine and RV, 4354 Hwy. 101.

The Big Creek Work Day starts at 10 am on Saturday, July 23. Park at Big Creek Park and ride to the trail head or car pool to the trailhead, where there is limited parking available.
