A fours to be reckoned with
Neskowin Chamber Music begins its 28th season with an appearance by the Alexander String Quartet at Camp Winema this Sunday, Oct. 22.
In the years since its founding in 1981, the Alexander has performed in all the major music capitals of the world on five continents. Widely admired for interpretations of Beethoven, Mozart and Shostakovich, its recordings of these works have been acclaimed by critics everywhere. The quartet is also known for advocacy of new music and has commissioned a number of works in that genre. It was the first American string quartet to win the International String Quartet Competition.
The quartet is a major presence in San Francisco, its home base. It serves as Ensemble in Residence for San Francisco performances and as director of the Morrison Music Center at San Francisco State University’s College of Liberal Arts.
Current members are Zakarias Grafilo, first violin; David Samuel, viola; Sandy Wilson, cello; and its newest member, Yuna Lee, second violin. Lee has toured with the San Francisco Symphony and frequently appeared with other chamber music ensembles in the Bay Area.
Sunday’s concert begins at 3 pm at Camp Winema, located two miles north of Neskowin, just off Highway 101. Season tickets are $130 and individual tickets are $30. For more information, go to neskowinchambermusic.org or call 503-965-6499.
