A perfect day in Yachats

Among the many things that make Yachats the “Gem of the Oregon Coast,” is the combination of charming shops and stunning trails, located just a stone’s throw from each other.

One of the best places to start an active day is at the Bread and Roses Cafe, where you can enjoy a steaming cup of coffee and a morning treat, and grab an artisan bread loaf for a picnic on the trail.

“We have European-style pastries with lots of fresh fruit,” team member Heather Hoen said. “Our flours are organic and are sourced from Oregon mills as much as is possible.”

For breakfast or lunch, the menu at the Green Salmon includes vegan options like the delectable “bacon” on sandwiches like the breakfast muffin, made with tofu scramble. Or, for TV fans, try the “Only Murders in the Building” omelet, which is “taking liberty with Steve Martin’s bell pepper omelet.”

The Green Salmon’s signature organic coffees and cocoas are also artfully packaged and make a great souvenir or gift from your trip.

Possibilities for outdoor adventure include Cape Perpetua, an area that includes the popular Amanda Trail. Closer to town, the Ya’Xaik trail, on the east side of the highway, includes towering trees and educational signs about the history of the local indigenous tribes that once lived in the area.

For those with lower mobility, the 804 trail offers a casual stroll with plenty of ocean views.

Ready for a break? Stop in for a wine tasting at the shop named for one of the plants you’ll see along the 804 trail: Beach Daisy Wines.

“We currently have 484 different wines and are adding new ones all the time,”said Todd Moyer, who with wife, Karen, opened the shop in December 2020.

“We have many Northwest wines and also imports. We started out with Italian wines as the biggest import section because that’s what I like, but from customer input we’ve added many more from France, Spain, Germany, South America and Portugal."

The shop’s wine club has more than 60 members and growing. An email list can help visitors plan a trip when the shop is having an event.

“We have a quarterly event for the wine club members that includes live music,” Moyer said. “Every Saturday we have a free wine tasting and small plates from noon to 6 pm. We are also going to start having Italian Nights about once a month. People that happen in by chance during one of our events are delighted.”

Though Yachats has many dine-in options, if you want to head back home or to your room for dinner and it is Thursday or Saturday, treat yourself to of one of the best pies on the coast: from 3 to 6 pm on those two days, Bread and Roses closes its doors so staff can work on pizza night. The 14-inch pizzas include build-your-own options as well as specials like the Mushroom and Goat Cheese, with mushroom white wine sauce, mozzarella, Parmesan and goat cheese, cremini mushrooms, arugula, red onions and chopped garlic.

And if you are feeling like being social after an afternoon of hiking, shopping or even just relaxing, share a pint or a cocktail with old friends or new at the Yachats Underground Pub and Grub.

“The customers are what makes this place great,” said bartender Susie Adams. “I love how everyone makes you feel at home here, whether you are local or live far away and came here for the first time.”

Spring is one of the best times to visit Yachats, where the trails are less busy and every business in town welcomes you like a local.
