Celebration of Honor passes muster

For the past 19 years, Chinook Winds Casino Resort, owned and operated by the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, has spearheaded the annual Celebration of Honor, an event that honors active-duty personnel, military veterans and their families.

From Wednesday, Sept. 14 through Sunday, Sept. 18, the resort is proud to continue the tradition of honoring men and women who have served, and are serving, their country.

The celebration includes a special drop by Explore Lincoln City’s “Float Fairies,” who hide specially made floats all year above the high-tide line on Lincoln City’s seven miles of beach.

Walk around the resort grounds to view vintage and modern military vehicles provided and displayed by the American Infantry Soldier Group, military flags in a special array and the Vietnam Veterans of America 805 Oregon Veteran wall.

Veterans and active-duty personnel can show their military ID for free movie tickets and popcorn at the Historic Bijou Theatre.

On Wednesday, veterans and active-duty personnel can stop by the Winners Circle at the casino and show proof of military service to receive a free dining voucher, valid through Sept. 25. Winners Circle membership is required and can be completed at the casino.

On Saturday, the Lincoln City Kiwanis Parade of Flags will line the streets of Lincoln City from sunrise to sundown. Then, at 2 pm, the re-dedication of the Desert Storm memorial will take place in front of the casino to honor those men and women who lost their lives serving their country.

There are many ways for individuals, families, youth groups, businesses and organizations to still become involved with the Celebration of Honor. Examples include: a fundraiser for a veterans’ group; a special or discount for veterans and their families at your business; red, white and blue decorations at your store; flying red, white and blue kites; displaying the American flag at your home or business or simply offering a veteran or active-duty person a “Welcome home” or “Thank you” are just a few ways you can become part of this year’s celebration. Whether it’s a big event or a small fundraiser — every effort contributes to make the Celebration of Honor more meaningful and personal.
