Wildfire
That used to be just the name of a catchy popular song and innumerable spirited horses. That changed Wednesday morning, September 9, 2020. The Echo Mountain Fire, centered in the nearby settlement of Otis, hideously feeding on homes the way blood-thirsty Moloch devoured sacrificial babies, encroached on Lincoln City, turning the sky into poison tomato paste, and choking us with smoke and ash.
Detour No. 7: Siletz Bay National Wildlife Refuge
After about three miles walking south from Lincoln City along the side of Highway 101 you pass Highway 229 right before the Siletz River Bridge. On the east side is Siletz Bay National Wildlife Refuge.
Rising together
When the Echo Mountain wildfire broke out east of Chinook Winds Casino Resort, owned and operated by the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, the managers immediately stepped up to offer hotel rooms to people who were being evacuated and even losing their homes.
Detour No. 7: Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge
Located just south of Pacific City, this refuge covers 1,202 acres, and is the largest in Oregon’s Coastal Refuge Complex.
