Residing beside where the Yaquina River flows lazily into the ocean and nestled between rolling hills and dense trees, lies the quaint town of Toledo, known in part for attracting residents with genuine artistic skills.

Spend even a moment in the mill town of Toledo and it becomes obvious why it is regarded as the place where art and industry meet. The twin pursuits weave together throughout town in the form of mural installations, galleries and public sculptures set against vistas of the paper mill, train cars and local shipyards.

Nature inspired ceramics and paintings will be featured at the August show at the Hoffman Center for the Arts, on display through Aug. 26.

Siletz-based ceramic and mixed media artist, Paula Teplitz, will open her new exhibit, “In *Animate* Objects” at the Newport Visual Arts Center this Friday, Aug. 4. The show will run through Sept. 30 in the Upstairs Gallery.

Sister and brother artists, Regina Atwood and Bill Hamilton, will show how their mutual love of nature and art are translated into two distinct styles when the Freed Gallery presents the fourth show in the “Meet the Artist” series this Saturday, August 5.

Gone are the days when quilting was done only by our grandmothers using old clothing for piecing. Today, it’s a multi-million-dollar industry attracting artistic types of all ages. A great sampling of both modern and traditional quilts will be on display at the Oregon Coastal Quilters Guild show, “Quilts by the Sea” this Friday and Saturday, August 4 and 5.

Spot some art that really represents the coast when the Yaquina Art Gallery Spotlight Show features painters Charlotte Carter and Diane Pinizzotto, opening this Friday, Aug. 5 and running through Aug. 18.

Originally designated in 1976, the newly reauthorized Cascade Head Biosphere Region includes the Salmon River and Estuary, the Cascade Head Marine Reserve and the City of Lincoln City. The Cascade Head Biosphere Region has a prolific diversity of wildlife including black bears, cougars, bald eagles, peregrine falcons, five species of salmon, migrating gray and humpback whales and four federally listed endangered species: the spotted owl, marbled murrelet, coho salmon and Oregon silverspot butterfly.

Oregon Shores’ CoastWatch welcomes back coastal ecologist Stewart Schultz on Thursday and Friday, Aug. 3 and 4. Dr. Schultz will lead walking explorations of Nehalem Bay and host a dinner and discussion on the bay’s plants and animals and the role tides play.

The Newport/Oregon Coast Community Drum Circle will present the July edition of its Thirteenth Annual Summer Celebration Outdoor Concert Series at Newport's Coast Park this Saturday, July 29.
